Be an Olympian: Maple Bear Terry Fox Charity Fundraiser 2024
For our Maple Bear 2024 charity fundraiser this year, we celebrate Terry Fox who was a trailblazer in the fight against cancer. After Terry’s leg was amputated due to a malignant tumour, he pioneered his Marathon of Hope in 1981 – a 5,000 kilometres cross-country run through Canada – to raise money for cancer research and awareness. Since then, we’ve strived to continue his legacy with our Terry Fox Run fundraiser which we started out in 2019. This year’s theme, “Be an Olympian”, celebrates our young children as champions of change for a brighter tomorrow!
We are thrilled to share that Maple Bear Singapore, in partnership with the Terry Fox Foundation, raised SGD $200,200 for the Singapore Cancer Society. A huge thank you to our 56 Maple Bear Schools, 6000 children, and 12000 parents for coming together to make this event a marvellous success. We’d also like to thank our guests of honour, Marina Ramalho, Senior Foreign Policy & Diplomacy Officer of the High Commission of Canada In Singapore, Geraldyn Lim, Chief Operating Officer of the Singapore Cancer Society, and Eric Chua, Senior Parliamentary Secretary of the MCCY & MSF, whose support highlights the power of community in the fight against cancer.
At our Olympics finale on July 8th, our little Olympians teamed up, worked together, and tackled various hurdles and races held at Bukit Gombak stadium. Despite the rain and mud, our Maple Bear teams lit up the stadium with boundless energy and a vibrant parade full of music, colour, and dazzling spirit. Our teachers, children and parents gave it their all in our Be Extraordinary Athletes Race, tug of wars, piggyback games, and baton blaze. Each child took home a medal at the end of the day for showing sportsmanship, perseverance, and teamwork all for a good cause! All donors also received Olympic Bands, a Maple Bear Rosette and a golden football as a special gift for their generosity.
We first embarked on our charity fundraiser in June with Chinook, our mascot, visiting 56 Maple Bear preschools in Singapore to lead our young cubs on a dance-a-long to our Charity Theme Song – Magic in the Air. Our fundraiser concluded with spectacular success at our Maple Bear Olympic stadium, and we just love any opportunity to connect and celebrate with our wider community. It was a truly special day with all our participants creating timeless memories of childhood as one big Maple Bear family!
At Maple Bear, we believe in inspiring our children from a young age on the joy of giving back. Incorporating fundraising into our curriculum program is one of the many ways we teach our children crucial life skills such as goal setting, planning, accountability, teamwork and leadership. What better way to practise these important life-skills while having a blast raising money for the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS).
A big hooray to our Maple Bear Singapore/Terry Fox Agents of Change! Rain or shine, we can persevere to make a positive impact together.
